Fortresses and Defenses
These are defenses and castles that you may construct at your discretion, whenever, wherever you want. There are 4 basic types of fortresses:
Class D ~ basic wooden walls; earthen ramparts and trenches ; central tower within the walls. The quickest and cheapest to build. Defenders gain a 25% bonus on troop strength and a 10% heal bonus during warfare.
Class C ~ minor stone walls; outlying trenches and minor walls; small central castle within walls with several towers. The standard castle. 50% bonus to troops strength and a 15% heal bonus during warfare.
Class B ~ major external walls; gatehouse with fortified towers all around; large keep and castle area within walls, can house an entire village. 100% bonus to troops strength and a 20% heal bonus.
Class A ~ Largest possible structure to be built. Massive walls, towers, and castle/fortress construction within; separate keep/garrison attached to main complex; could house an entire town. 200% troop strength bonus; 25% heal bonus.
Construction time for each one is different, D = a couple months; C = up to a year; B = up to 3 years; A = at least 5 years. Costs depends on kingdom variables.
The best way to construct castles are to build class C or D types and then upgrade them when they are completed. This way, they are useable while they are being upgraded to the larger, more time consuming Class B and Class A fortresses.
Troop strength bonuses is the percentage of actual numbers that are there that can get 'extra' strength. In other words, 100 men in a Class C fortress would fight as if there is 150 men; 100 men in a Class A fortress would fight as if there is 200 men. Heal Bonus is the percentage of damage that will be decreased in battle; if defenders in a Class B fortress lost 100 men in an
attack, they would be able to 'absorb' 20% of their losses, and instead only 80 men would be lost.
Each fortress also has an area of control that depends on its size. A class C fortress may be able to keep a watch on a 30 mile radius, and lend support without instruction on a nearby city that was attacked; while a class A fortress could perhaps watch as far away as 100 miles. No enemy troops or supply lines can pass through a fortresses area of control without the owner of
the fortress being aware of it. Places strategically, fortresses protect the civilized internal parts of your kingdom.
